Camper

This is our entry level option and is only available to South African Citizens.

Who is this for?

This opportunity is ideal for individuals who loves the outdoor, camping and nature, but do not frequently travel to far out places. It is also ideal for Long-stay Campers spending a month or more at one particular campsite or RV park.

What does a Camper do? (besides camping)

A WTG Camper generates his/her own income by writing articles for What The Gravel to be published on its network of related websites. Campers will get paid per published article through sponsored content inserted into each article.

Campers are also allowed to sell digital products such as “10 Tips to enjoy Bush Camping” and earn revenue from sales.

What does a Camper need?

Besides a passion for outdoor life, some previous experience is needed to fact-check generated content.

A Laptop and internet access is compulsory. Working from a Smartphone is not recommended.

 How much does it cost to become a Camper?

There is a one-time set-up fee of $15 payable to create a Camper Profile on our back-end.

A Monthly Membership fee is payable to the Franchisor as determined by the Master Franchisee.

Explorer

Coming 1 March 2026

This is our second entry level option and is currently only available to South African Citizens.

Who is this for?

This opportunity is ideal for individuals who loves the outdoor, camping and nature, and frequently travel to far out places. It is ideal for Campers spending a month or more at one particular campsite or RV park as base camp from where to explore the surrounding region.

What does an Explorer do? (besides exploring)

A WTG Explorer generates his/her own income by creating route maps for What The Gravel to be published on its network of related websites as downloadable GPS maps. Explorers will get paid per published functional GPX maps which can work with Google Maps or similar mobile apps as well as Garmin and Tom-Tom GPS Navigators.

Explorers are also licensed to sell digital products such as “10 Must Visit Places along Route 66” and earn revenue from sales.

What does an Explorer need?

Besides a passion for outdoor life, regional knowledge and experience is needed to fact-check generated content. Routes created by Explorers are relied on by tourists all over the world and regular “checking and updating” is required.

Ideally a 4×4 vehicle is required, but High Clearance SUV’s and other 2WD drive vehicles are allowed but may limit creative capabilities.

A specific Smartphone App is required to map routes in real time.

A Laptop and internet access is compulsory although off-line work is required and uploaded when internet becomes accessible.

How much does it cost to become an Explorer?

There is a one-time set-up fee of $25 payable to create an Explorer Profile on our back-end.

A Monthly Membership fee is payable to the Franchisor as determined by the Master Franchisee.

Adventurer

This is our first Premium level option and is only available to South African and Namibian Citizens.

Who is this for?

This is one of those opportunities where the sheep and goats are separated. As the name suggest this is for persons who cannot sit still for a moment. Adventurers are financially self-sufficient to spend at least one week per month on an adventure into the wild. This is NOT a side-hustle!

What does an Adventurer do? (different than an Explorer)

A WTG Camper generates his/her own income by writing articles for What The Gravel to be published on its network of related websites. Campers will get paid per published article through sponsored content inserted into each article.

Campers are also allowed to sell digital products such as “10 Tips to enjoy Bush Camping” and earn revenue from sales.

What does an Adventurer need?

Besides a passion for outdoor life, regional knowledge and off-road driving experience is needed to fact-check generated content routes and navigation accuracy. Routes created by Explorers are relied on by tourists all over the world and regular “checking and updating” is required. The Adventurer are responsible to use these tools to ensure travel safety, accessibility and accuracy.

Adventurers are also responsible for local Site Portfolio Development. This entails sourcing new places along routes and introduce the WTG Press Office Package to them. Adventurers earn 50% commission on successful new Site Acquisitions.

Specific Requirements:

  • A 4×4 vehicle is required. Ideally one that is kitted out for Adventure Travel.
  • A specific Smartphone App is required to map routes in real time.
  • A Laptop and internet access is compulsory although off-line work is required and uploaded when internet becomes accessible. A Star-link Mini is recommended.
  • A pair of Digital Video Cameras with Tripods are required. Raw Footage is generated with the use of Cameras and a smartphone. Video recordings may involve a Field Studio Set-up from time to time. Remote Microphones and a Clapperboard is highly recommended.
  • Verifiable SFV Profiles on Tiktok, YouTube and Instagram.

Trailblazer

This is our second Premium level option and is only available to South African and Namibian Citizens.

Who is this for?

As the name suggest this is for persons who go where Eagles dare. Trailblazers are financially self-sufficient to spend at least three days per week on the road into the wild until reaching break-even. This is a full-time business.

It is ideal for a person residing in a rural town or farm with easy access to local places as potential clients.

What does a Trailblazer do? (different than an Explorer or Adventurer)

A WTG Trailblazer is a Brand Representative and generates his/her own income by sourcing new clients for What The Gravel by offering our selection of products. In short, this is a Marketing and Sales related business opportunity.

What does a Trailblazer need?

Besides a passion for outdoor life, regional knowledge and off-road driving skills, Direct Sales experience is needed to source new clients.

The Trailblazers are responsible for new business acquisition for the local Franchisees and earn an income from Contract and Commission Sales.

Trailblazers are also responsible for local expansion of the WTG Network by inviting new 3-Star Operators. This entails responding to and sourcing new entrepreneurs interested in joining the WTG network.

Specific Requirements:

  • A Proven Sales and Marketing Track Record of at least 20 years, ideally in the Adventure and/or Travel industry.
  • A Laptop and internet access is compulsory although off-line work is required and uploaded when internet becomes accessible. A Star-link Mini is recommended.
  • A pair of Digital Video Cameras with Tripods are required. Raw Footage is generated with the use of Cameras and a smartphone. Video recordings may involve a Field Studio Set-up from time to time. Remote Microphones and a Clapperboard is highly recommended.
  • Verifiable SFV Profiles on Tiktok, YouTube and Instagram.

Wilderness Master

This opportunity is the Pinnacle of What The Gravel and has a different flair!

Currently available to South African and Namibian Citizens.

Who is this for?

As the name suggest, this is for people with a skill-set that can be applied in the What The Gravel stable. The question is; “What skills do you have?”

What does a Wilderness Master do?

A WTG Wilderness Master is responsible for the training and development of internal operators as well as clients.

The following skills are essential in the WTG Market:

  • First-aid training
  • Fire Fighting Training
  • Off-road Driver training
  • Reptile recognition and awareness training
  • Survival Skills
  • Mobile Radio Operator training
  • Search and Rescue skills
  • Vehicle Recovery training
  • and more…

What does a Wilderness Master need?

The relevant certifications to offer a training course is not compulsory unless it is a skills program in your country.

A completed Wilderness Master Certification issued by WTG to provide internal training to operators is a key requirement.

Specific Requirements:

  • A valid training certificate as a trainer where required.
  • A Wilderness Master Certificate.
  • A Zoom or MS Teams account for online training.
  • A Laptop and internet access is compulsory although off-line work is required and uploaded when internet becomes accessible. A Star-link Mini is recommended.

 How much does it cost to become a Wilderness Master?

There is a one-time set-up fee of $25 payable to create your Wilderness Master Profile on our back-end.

Registration fee of $150 is payable to the enroll in the Certification Program.

A monthly trainer license fee is payable directly to WTG HQ in South Africa.
